Internship Opportunities

Marine Field Techniques Research Internships with Island Marine Institute

This internship program is open to undergraduate students, graduate students, recent graduates and marine professionals from around the world working toward a career in marine mammal biology, zoology, marine biology or a related field.

Our internship program allows students to gain valuable research skills at no cost.  

Interns participate in: 

  • data collection on the North Pacific humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae)
  • opportunistic photographs of whales from commercial whale watch boats*
  • data collection on other marine mammals observed while aboard our whale watch boats
  • answering questions on excursion trips
  • photo analysis of humpback whales' tail fluke markings
  • data entry
  • updating fluke ID catalogue
  • utilizing Whale Cam™, our live underwater video equipment (attached to the vessel) for viewing and analysis
  • other duties and opportunities as they arise

*Federal and State law requires vessels to stay outside of a 100 yard approach limit when encountering whales.  

Study Whales on Maui

Research scientists and students with careers in science ages 18 or older participate in our intensive 4-6 month internships. 
 

Island Marine Institute also participates in other ongoing research projects, including a population and fibropapilloma assessment of the Hawaii green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), as well as a coral and faunal survey of Maui's coral reefs.
